At the end of the nineteenth century the young Palmina lives in a poor village in Sicily which is experiencing the first social unrest (the Sicilian 'fasci'). Palmina married by proxy an Italian resident in America. The dream of joining him in the United States seems to take shape when two men arrive in town who say they are ready to organize a clandestine trip to the new world.
