The church of Our Lady of Sorrows
The church of Our Lady of Sorrows
Chiesa della Badia costruction dates back to 1796 by the will of the late noblewoman Felicia Schininà di Sant’Elia, who wanted to build a boarding school with the purpose of providing an education to female orphans of Ragusa. Nowadays, in place of the boarding school stands a Cultural center called CCC (Cultural Commercial Center) dedicated to Mimì Arezzo, while the church maintain its sacred function.
The peculiarity of this church is given by the interior which has a circular plan, according to the distinctive traits of Baroque Art.
At the same time, the interior preserve some exquisite paintings by Tommaso Pollace, a Sicilian painter, such as “Santa Giuliana Falconeri”, “La Presentazione al Tempio di Gesù Bambino” and “La Pietà” at the central altar. Worthy of note is also the beautiful flooring in black and white pece with its geometrical motifs.
