After the devastating earthquake of 1693, the city of Ragusa was rebuilt from the rubble using stone taken from the underground quarries which can still be seen in the city centre.

When you visit the old Gonfalone quarry, you will be astonished by the scale of these underground spaces, which can create a strange sense of alienation in visitors.

You cannot fail to notice the marks left by pickaxes and circular saws on the walls, testament to the decades of work by the tireless workers who gave us the new Ragusa.

Site currently under maintenance. Hypothetical reopening scheduled for October 2024.

Pedestrian entrance next to the Umberto I gym of the homonymous high school.
Easy route.
Guided tour by CAI Ragusa and ARGS guides.
