Irminio estuary nature reserve
The reserve covers an area of three hundred hectares, protecting a very delicate ecosystem with vegetation that is typical of the Mediterranean brush that has developed to the point that it is considered a ‘brush forest’.
In terms of animals, birds are particularly important, with numerous species of migratory birds from nearby Africa.
The protected area includes the river estuary and a section of the Mediterranean coast with sandy beaches and sheer cliffs overhanging the sea.
Enjoy walks through the reserve in close contact with nature, and if you are a birdwatcher you will love spending time here. T
he Irminio river, which was once navigable and was mentioned by Pliny, used to mark the boundary between Camarina and Syracuse.
