Irminio estuary nature reserve

One of the most important places in the province of Ragusa for nature and wildlife.
The reserve was set up in 1985 to protect this coastal habitat which is a rare example of brush forest on sand dunes, not to mention the ecosystem of the Irminio river.

The reserve covers an area of three hundred hectares, protecting a very delicate ecosystem with vegetation that is typical of the Mediterranean brush that has developed to the point that it is considered a ‘brush forest’.

In terms of animals, birds are particularly important, with numerous species of migratory birds from nearby Africa.

The protected area includes the river estuary and a section of the Mediterranean coast with sandy beaches and sheer cliffs overhanging the sea.

Enjoy walks through the reserve in close contact with nature, and if you are a birdwatcher you will love spending time here. T

he Irminio river, which was once navigable and was mentioned by Pliny, used to mark the boundary between Camarina and Syracuse.
